Cord Blood Coordinating Center: Standards & Measurements

Monitoring the performance of the C.W. Bill Young Cell Transplantation Program (Program) against specific standards is key to helping more patients have a successful umbilical cord blood or bone marrow transplant.

The Cord Blood Coordinating Center (CBCC) is one component of the Program. The CBCC partners with cord blood banks to recruit expectant parents for umbilical cord donation; this includes its network of cord blood banks and banks holding National Cord Blood Inventory contracts. The CBCC also increases access to transplant by matching and facilitating distribution of donated cord blood units searched through the registry.

Performance standards for the CBCC describe:

  • Number of cord blood units on the Program's registry. This includes reporting the numbers of cord blood units collected from these races and ethnicities: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African-American, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and Hispanic or Latino.
  • Quality of cord blood units and testing.
  • Search process accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness.
  • Safety of donors and patients.
  • Transplant center service satisfaction.

The CBCC regularly reports performance measurements to HRSA.
